For [Soviet Era Challenge]
The Su-15 was a twin-engine supersonic interceptor developed by the Soviet Union's Sukhoi Design Bureau, entering service in 1965. Designed primarily for high-altitude air defense, it featured powerful turbojet engines (initially R-11, later upgraded to R-13), a distinctive delta-wing configuration (early models) with later versions adopting double-delta wings, and a nose-mounted radar for target acquisition.
With a maximum speed of Mach 2.5 and a service ceiling of 20,000 meters (65,600 ft), the Su-15 was armed primarily with air-to-air missiles (R-8/K-8 and later R-60s) and lacked an internal cannon. It gained notoriety for its role in several Cold War incidents, including the 1978 downing of Korean Air Lines Flight 902 and the 1983 destruction of another Korean airliner (KAL-007).
Over 1,200 units were produced before its retirement in 1993, succeeded by more advanced interceptors like the MiG-31. The Su-15 remains emblematic of Soviet-era air defense strategies, prioritizing speed, altitude, and ground-controlled interception capabilities.
