hokkodo light bomber ' supaida '
the third of Hokkodo's world renowned aircraft was the terrifyingly effective type 99 ' Supaida ' ( spider ), an agile and fast aerial torpedo bomber, found not chasing other aircraft, but swooping down upon unprepared air destroyers and tearing them apart like vultures.
Introduced into a war that was beginning to look a lot more like a meat grinder, the concept for a purpose made aircraft for killing the near numberless amounts of airships japan possesed was issued under specification 223: a request for a light, 2 man bomber capable of delivering a payload and escaping as quickly as it had arrived. after 8 months the prototype performed against other candidates in a series of trials where its speed, manuverability, and powerful and unconventional ' aerial torpedo ' earned it the contract for an initional 60 airframes.
its handy control system also allowed the crew to control the bomb dropping ( ag 1 ) and selection of guns ( ag 2 + 3 ). as stated in the pilots handbook: always remember to drop the torpedo while facing the target, as its momentum and fins will keep it straight - while bombing can be a little tricky, dont worry - practice makes for perfection
