Designed to meet N.A.T.O lightweight strike fighter requirement, three prototypes and twenty-twenty-seven pre-production example of the G.91 were ordered. The first G.91 prototype, powered by a 4,520 lb.s.t. Orpheus B.Or.2, flew on August 9, 1956, and the second prototype, with the Orpheus B.Or.3, flew in July 1957. The definitive G.91 had the 6,810 lb.s.t. Orpheus B.Or.12 turbojet, larger overall dimensions and area ruling. Projected developments included the two-seat G-91T trainer and the G.91R reconnaissance fighter.
