Dornier Do.17Z-10 "Kauz" ll
In September 1940, changes took place in the composition of the night fighters. II / NJG 1 became I / NJG 2 and continued over eastern England. And the new II / NJG 1 was created from three squadrons of Bf 110D-I / U1 fighters taken from I / ZG 76. At the same time, a separate 3rd squadron II / ZG 76, created from Do 17Z-10 Kauz I, as a long-range night fighter unit, it was now transferred to II / NJG 1, where it became 4th Squadron and operated as an independent unit (under the leadership of Sonderkomando Schiphol). The first victory on the Do 17Z-10 of 4./NJG 1 came under Lieutenant Ludwig Becker when he shot down Wellington on the night of October 18-19, 1940. By October 1940, the Luftwaffe night fighter force, under the command of Lieutenant General Kammhuber, consisted of four air groups. Of these, I / NJG 2, operating from the airfield at Gilze-Rijen, was intended primarily for deep night offensive raids, complemented by 4./NJG 1, operating from Deelen in the Netherlands. The pilots of these units, flying Ju 88 C and Do 17Z-10, worked out the technique of penetrating into the steep British bombers waiting for an approach, and successfully shot them down. Moreover, sometimes, having received even minor damage from the fire of German night fighters, British bombers suffered accidents during landing and for a long time or even completely out of order. The remaining Do 17Z-10 Kauz II continued to operate in conjunction with the Ju 88 C as part of I / NJG 2, carrying out long-range interception of RAF bombers over their airfields. During the year, from October 1940 to October 1941, the pilots of this group shot down 51 British bomber, losing 25 of their fighters. By themselves, these figures indicate a small success for the German pilots. But it must be borne in mind that these raids by night fighters produced a much greater psychological effect. The crews of the British bombers had to be in constant tension. After all, even after returning from a combat
