Avro Lancaster B.III Special

From those wacky guys and gals over at Wikipedia;

"Operation Chastise was an attack on German dams carried out on 16–17 May 1943 by Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, subsequently publicised as the "Dam Busters",using a specially developed "bouncing bomb" invented and developed by Barnes Wallis. The Möhne and Edersee Dams were breached, causing catastrophic flooding of the Ruhr valley and of villages in the Eder valley; the Sorpe Dam sustained only minor damage. Two hydroelectric power stations were destroyed and several more were damaged. Factories and mines were also either damaged or destroyed. An estimated 1,600 civilians drowned: about 600 Germans and 1,000 mainly Soviet forced-labourers. The damage was mitigated by rapid repairs by the Germans, but production did not completely return to normal until September."

Yes - the Dam Busters. No. 617(B) Squadron, RAF. Operation Chastise was undoubtedly one of the biggest propaganda victories for the Allies of all the second world war - even if the long term strategic goals were not quite realised.

Using cunning, guile and good old fashioned British ingenuity (or "shed-craft" as I like to call it), the brave gents of 617 managed to breach two of their three targets and cause a fair bit of mayhem in the late spring of 1943.

This is a rough replica of the B.III Special - I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make her spin her bomb, so she just spits her out. The bomb does "bounce" a little, but in the end she just tumbles along the surface towards her target. Where the two torpedoes and 8 (or was it 9?) bombs explode rather nicely.

I have tested this against bridges and shipping and can say that one hit pretty much beats anything. Which is good, since this kite only carries one. Don't miss.

Good hunting.

Controls are as my earlier B.1.
Top turret omitted.
AG4 drops the bomb.
It works. Kind of.

Pip pip.

I think I know how you get the bomb to spin.
I think I know how you get it to spin: you put a detacher on the plane, connected to the bomb. Then you just take a small rotator and connect it to the detacher. Afterwards you go to xml and give it 360° rotation and give it 200% spin.

@GhostHTX One of these days I'll have a stab at the Lincoln derivative, the venerable Shack. Many a happy but confusing hour spent bumbling all over the Iceland Faeroes gap searching for Bears under the "control" of a myopic, half deaf AEO from 8 Sqn.

@GhostHTX point taken old boy. My advice would be to avoid big lasses in dark woods. Pip pip, and all that. :-D

@Alien Now now old boy; when you were perfecting the art of the seat stick interface on the worlds most exciting interceptor, I was building Airfix models, running around getting drunk and generally up to no good with the lads of 2466 Squadron (atc). Learning the jingo was compulsory. I was too young to be on the books, but my Grandad and Uncle were W/Os so I was allowed to tag along.

Anyway, point being that you have your wings. I have the lingo, a dodgy knee from an evasion exercise that went pear shaped in the woods (a big lass fell on me) and know what polo mints dipped in chippy sauce taste like...

    Many thanks.
As for the Linc... Sorry, old boy. Im now on to bigger and better things. Well... bigger anyway. Shorter wings... Longer most definitely. Maybe not better, either. But definitely more of the same... Named after a town in bonny Scotland, too... @Tang0five
