Notes:
- The MiG-15 has been on my list for a while, but I wanted to wait until I felt I could do it justice. It’s not exactly the rarest plane to see a build of, but I’m happy with the result and hope you enjoy it.
- Performance will be quite a bit worse at low airspeeds; recommend staying above 400 knots for maneuvering.
Background:
When introduced in 1949, the MiG-15 was arguably the most capable fighter aircraft in the world. Exploiting foreign technologies like the British Nene engine and German research into swept wings, the resulting aircraft had revolutionary performance. It featured a short, cigar-shaped fuselage with a nose-mounted intake feeding a single turbojet at the rear. The wings were mid-mounted, swept back 35 degrees, and featured a slight anhedral. Each wing had two prominent wing fences on the upper surface. The tail surfaces extended above the jet exhaust and were also swept back. The bis version was introduced a year later with a host of minor improvements and is identifiable by the light added to the nose intake splitter.
The MiG-15 quickly proved to be a menace in the skies over Korea, where Soviet pilots covertly flew them with North Korean markings. It was superior to Western types like the Meteor and Shooting Star, and could intercept B-29 raids with impunity. This state of affairs continued until the F-86 Sabre was brought to Korea. The two aircraft were very closely matched in capabilities, and pilot training was often the deciding factor in combat. The MiG had a better rate of climb and high altitude performance. However, it suffered from compressibility problems at high speeds due to the lack of an all-moving tail, and it had a more sluggish roll rate.
Though most famous for its use in the Korean War, the MiG-15 saw combat in conflicts throughout the Cold War. It also regularly shot down reconnaissance aircraft that strayed too close to the Soviet border. Widely exported, it had a long and eventful service life. Although replaced in service by the superior MiG-17, the MiG-15 remains a legendary aircraft. Many MiG-15s survive today, even in flying condition.
