The DT-9 was created due to the DT-7's lack of maneuverability. Also DT-7 is considered not good for use in urban areas because of its width. With the manufacture of the DT-9 is expected to achieve better combat performance in urban areas.
Unfortunately, the reduced size made it only possible to carry a 120mm cannon and lost access to the ATGM.
