Piaggio P.109 Doppia Fusoliera Bombardiere

735 DeerForceOne  4.2 years ago

Developed for its much increased payload capacity, and longer range, the Double fuselage P.109 heavy bomber was a hell of a plane. It was put into service in 1945 and served until the end of the war - 1947. Whilst it could carry a payload unmatched by almost any other bomber at the time, it's performance was less than favorable. Defense was also an issue, whilst it was armed with eight of the formidable German 20mm MG151 cannons and two 12.7mm Beretta-SAFATs, they were sparse and left many dead zones. Overall the project was not very successful, however, it provided the Regia Areonautica with a machine that was great for propaganda and fear factor.
