The A-4A Skyhawk is a subsonic fighter-bomber developed by Douglas Aircraft in the 1950s, designed for carrier-based operations. Compact, lightweight, and agile, the aircraft features a delta wing without flaps and a simple design optimized for ease of maintenance and maneuverability. Powered by a Wright J65 turbojet engine, the A-4A could reach a top speed of 677 mph (approximately 1,090 km/h) and carry up to 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg) of ordnance, including bombs, rockets, and missiles. Its initial configuration included two fixed Colt Mk 12 20mm cannons. Used during the Vietnam War, the aircraft proved versatile in both attack missions and close air support. Thanks to its simplicity and reliability, the A-4A had a long service life and became a symbol of U.S. naval aviation.
