oddboy mk. II
Built under license from napkin7, the oddboy mk. II expands on the original design in many ways. The obvious addition is the paint job but it’s what’s under the hood that is most impressive.
Smith Works found it would be most cost effective to test new tech if it were fitted to an existing airframe, rather than start from the ground up. The oddboy was chosen for its unique design and stable platform.
The first modification is a jet turbine located centrally within the fuselage. In order to “breathe”, the nose cone is retracted into the intake.
Secondly, experimentation with changing geometry in the air was achieved by making the wings jettesonable.
Added weight from the new turbine was overcome by increasing the piston engines h.p. To 900 each, and adding an inch to the diameter of the propellers.
Losing the wings however, eliminates the alerons and thus the ability to roll. The oddboy mk.II utilizes thrust vectoring to take back 6-axis control. But what good is roll with no lift? The wings provided obvious lift for the aircraft and the horizontal stabilizers aren’t enough to maintain flight. This was addressed by adding very aesthetically pleasing structural lift panels to the body which blend into the horizontal stabs.
Lastly, it was decided that landing could not be safely achieved on the aircraft’s belly, and since the main landing gear also are jettisoned with the wings and pistons, three parachutes were added to float the plane back onto terra firma.
Other minor contouring as applied to give make this a Smith design to a certain degree.
Operation:
Throttle 100%
Full nose up trim AT ALL TIMES
Rotate after 150-160mph
Retract gear
AG-1 to jettison wings and activate turbine.
(Reduced throttle will slow roll)
Approach runway
Approx 100-500 feet AGL, cut throttle to 0% and activate AG-2
Trim neutral to close intake
Stick/yolk back for soft landing.
