GAZ 66 information

(colloquially. name: "shishiga" or "shisharik") is a Soviet and Russian medium-tonnage all-terrain truck with a 4 × 4 wheel formula, a 2.0 ton load capacity and a cabin above the engine.

The most massive four-wheel drive two-axle truck in the Soviet Army of the USSR Armed Forces. It was also used in the national economy of the USSR/Of Russia. It was developed and produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant from 1964 to 1999, has a large number of modifications and special machines made on their basis. He was popularly nicknamed "Shishiga" and "Shishka" in consonance with the number 66.

History

The first prototypes of the GAZ-66 were created in 1957, but due to the lack of a serial engine of the required power, the production of the GAZ-66 was launched only from July 1964. In the period 1958-1962, a 1.2-ton GAZ-62 truck was produced in small quantities, with a cab borrowed from GAZ-66. In July 1967, the front facing of the cab was changed on all cars (without horizontal slots). In 1966, he was awarded a Gold medal at the exhibition "Modern Agricultural Machinery" in Moscow. In 1967, he was awarded a Gold medal at the International Agricultural Machinery Fair in Leipzig. In April 1969, the GAZ-66 was the first of the Soviet cars to receive the state Quality Mark. GAZ-66 was exported to all countries of the socialist camp.

The new GAZ-66 immediately became a bestseller in the Soviet Army - the truck quickly replaced the GAZ-63 and became the main light truck of the armed forces. There were countless modifications, experiments and difficult service in combat conditions ahead.
