Description:
The Aerfer Ariete (Italian for Ram) was a prototype fighter aircraft built in Italy in 1958. It was an improved derivative of the Aerfer Sagittario 2 and was an attempt to bring this aircraft to a standard where it could be a viable combat aircraft. Retaining much of the Sagittario 2 layout with a nose intake and ventral exhaust for the main Derwent engine, Ariete added a Rolls-Royce Soar RS.2 auxiliary turbojet to provide extra power for climb and sprint. In this case, a rear retractable air intake with an exhaust in the tail section was used. No production followed; a proposed de Havilland Specter rocket-powered version in place of the Aerfer Leone auxiliary turbojet was abandoned before a prototype could be built.
