1912 Bugatti 5 Litre
Ettore Bugatti set out to make a new kind of car when he quit his job in Deutz in 1910. He wrote in an open letter "I have decided to create a new breed of light car, able to render the same services, enjoying the same qualities, the same freedom, but freed forever from that great source of expense: weight." His first cars, especially the Type 13 and the Type 15, certainly lived up to that standard, and sold to many, among Prince Hohenlohe of Austria-Hungary in the year of 1910. Later, uphill races became the norm, and Bugattis became the regular winners. Finally, after much development, Bugatti himself drove this car at the Mont Ventoux Hill Climb. He was fourth fastest and came in first in his class. The car driven by Bugatti was estimated in 2009 to be worth upwards of 2,400,000 euros when it came to auction but remains still unsold. Note: Auxillary fuel tanks on the side are not accurate; they are for weight distribution and practical function only.
