The R-2 was designed in 1947 to patrol and to locate and track icebergs in Greenlands coastal waters. The R-2 was a sturdy aircraft, capable of putting up with the harsh winds and ice in the Northern Atlantic, but its 3 man crew was cramped and given an exhausting workload (2 people flew/performed other jobs while one rested) and the cockpit offered low visibility for the pilot. It never went into full production and only 3 were made, 2 being scrapped and 1 lost at sea.
