Notes:
- Thanks @EZkel for the original gunsight
- Remember, this is an interceptor! You will struggle to take on enemy fighters.
- Figured some people might prefer cannons to the rockets, and it has a nice livery too, so here’s a French F-86K.
Background:
U.S. allies needed an aircraft to counter the Soviet bomber threat, but the latest American interceptor, the F-86D and its sophisticated fire control system, were deemed too sensitive for export. A simplified version of the aircraft was needed. It was originally to feature four 20mm M24 cannons in place of the rocket armament, a simpler fire control system, and a crew of two to more effectively manage the radar. The second crew member was dropped, as it would mean a more extensive redesign, but the other changes went through and the aircraft became the F-86K.
The F-86K was manufactured by North American as well as by Fiat in Italy. It would eventually find its way into the air forces of Italy, France, Norway, the Netherlands, West Germany, Venezuela, Honduras, and Greece. The last F-86Ks would serve into the 1980s. France used the F-86K until replacing it with the Mirage III in 1962.
