Heinkel He 203 'Strauß'

47.9k Phantomium  7.8 years ago

The Luftwaffe found itself in need of long range bombers that could strike the American East Coast. At that time in 1944, only propeller aircraft were available.
Starting with 1945, jet engines became widespread throughout the Luftwaffe. Thus, work on the Amerika Bomber was resumed.

After a long contest, the two remaining competitors were Horten and Heinkel. The Horten brothers had designed a flying wing bomber, while Heinkel came with a more conventional concept that strongly resembled the American B-29. Both designs were given the green light for serial production which was to start in early December of 1945. They were the Horten H.XVIII and the Heinkel He 203.
The Heinkel weighted close to 115 tonnes. It was a truly huge aircraft. Loaded with 48 500 lbs bombs, it could carpet bomb large areas without a problem. The four Heinkel HeS 015B engines, which were specifically made for this aircraft, propelled it to a maximum of around 520 mph at 20.000 ft. The cockpit layout was a premiere in German aviation: closely resembling that of the B-29, the two pilots had a great view down below and over their heads. No machineguns were mounted on it.

By March 1946, two of each aircraft had been built. The four aircraft were assigned to the Kampfgeschwader 47 'Black Knights'. Later, in April 1946, they were joined by 6 other aircraft: two Hortens and four Heinkels. The Heinkel, being the heaviest aircraft to ever fly at that time, was nicknamed 'Strauß' (Ostrich).

They were sent in what seemed to be a suicidal mission: bombing London. The raid saw the loss of only two aircraft, but the destruction created was frightening: the Tower of London, the Buckingham Palace, the Big Ben and many other famous places in London were leveled. Besides that, almost all bridges were destroyed.

Later, in 1947, the Luftwaffe began raiding the American Coast, but retreated soon afterwards, as the USAF was far better armed than the RAF due to having huge numbers of jet fighters and overall better pilots.

The plane itself is a behemoth, so maneuver it with great care. It's quite nimble for its size, but that doesn't mean you can start chasing fighters in it.

AG 8 (green lights) for the landing gear (VTOL down in order to retract)
AG 1 for the bomb doors (yellow light) (VTOL down to open them)
AG 2 and 3 for the engines (red and blue lights).

It does feature a slight nose drop, but it can be corrected by playing around with the Trim.

The old one was taken down due to a few pieces that I forgot to repaint.

I could see how that could be a problem, but it still turned out beautifully! @PhantomBladeCorp

@Toast They're not supposed to dissappear into the wing. This is because I once experimented with this concept and ended up having my plane blow up.

It looks unfinished (although it isn't) because the part count was getting crazy already. I was gonna go for the multiple strips on the main wings (just like on the old one) but I realized that I'd end up with over 700 pieces again.

I totally overlooked the beauty of this aircraft because I thought it was unfinished. Truely a work of art! One complaint though not a big one, it bugs me a little since the wheels on the wings didn't disappear into the wing.
