In the mid 1950’s, a number of foreign nations desired to modernize their air forces but a lack of resources limited their options. Smith had an answer. A prototype, once in competitipn with the Lockheed P-80, was lifted from the filing cabinets and into the workshop.
The F-8 bacame the premier fighter, though in very small quantity, for multiple nations in South America and West Africa.
The alrady outdated airframe, coupled with relativly costly maintenance requirements, resulted in these aircraft being phased out before the 1960’s came to a close.
