The Smith S-14 was designed with efficiency in mind. The prop halos dissapated the drag from the propeller blades which allowed for smaller powerplanfs to be installed. Smaller engines meant less fuel consumption. AG1- Taxi lights.

Ahh, ducted fan it seems like, only problem is that the distance between the ring surface and propeller is still too big, if it was much closer (almost touching or simply embedding the prop into the ring) it will be much more efficient, theoretically that is, SP doesn't know such stuff...
