Aichi E13A: The first seaplane that i've ever built

The Aichi E13A, known to the Allies as "Jake," was a long-range reconnaissance seapplane employed by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from 1941 to 1945. Designed to replace the older Kawanishi E7K2 biplane, the E13A became the IJN's most numerous floatplane during World War II, with a total production of 1,418 units.

Design and Development

The E13A was a low-wing monoplane equipped with a central float and two outrigger stabilizing floats. It accommodated a crew of three and was powered by a single engine. The aircraft was capable of carrying a bomb load of up to 250 kg (550 lbs), allowing it to perform both reconnaissance and light attack missions.

Operational History

Entering service in 1941, the E13A operated extensively throughout the Pacific Theater. It was launched from various platforms, including seaplane tenders, cruisers, and battleships such as the Yamato and Musashi. The aircraft participated in major operations, including the attack on Pearl Harbor and the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway. Beyond reconnaissance, the versatile E13A was utilized for maritime patrols, anti-submarine warfare, convoy escort duties, and even kamikaze missions in the war's final stages.

Variants

Several variants of the E13A were developed to fulfill different roles:

E13A1: The initial production model.

E13A1a: Featured redesigned floats and improved radio equipment.

E13A1b: Equipped with air-to-surface radar for enhanced reconnaissance capabilities.

E13A1c: An anti-surface vessel version armed with two downward-firing 20mm cannons in addition to its standard bomb load.

Post-War Use and Legacy

After World War II, the E13A saw limited service with other nations. The French Navy operated eight captured units during the First Indochina War from 1945 to 1947. Additionally, the Royal Thai Navy is believed to have operated some E13As before the war. Today, a few wrecks and restored models are displayed in museums, serving as reminders of the aircraft's role in maritime aviation history.
