Concept from 1965, author Frank Herbert, "Dune." Jet-assisted ornithopters launched from the sand and patrolled planet Dune. Yes, the wings flap! And Ornithopter Dune can fly from Murphy to Tarpley -- to land, the wings go level on power-off, then glide.
