About
The Vickers Type 279 was built by Joe Bewsher based on the Vickers Jockey to meet the RAF specification F.5 / 34.
The Type 279 Venom was lighter than the Spitfire, Hurricane etc. and flew with a 600hp engine and could dispense the same eight 7.7mm as them, but the success of the Merlin engine and Spitfire and the accident with the Venom prototype stopped development.
However, as the following website mentions, the Venom had the potential to be a shipboard fighter.
The Sea Gladiator was outdated at the time, the Sea Hurricane was not very capable and the Seafire had an accident rate comparable to the Toyota Prius.
The Venom is rumoured to offer the stability of a solid design and good visibility through the side windows to ensure a safe descent to the carrier.
