The WLR-9 Mamut (Mammoth) was a Weilkovan twin-engined medium bomber designed before the Second Global War, The aircraft was known as one of the worst long lasting aircraft of the Second Global War.
Design
The WLR-9 was initially designed as a inter-war bomber by the Weilkovan defense corps in the early months of 1925. With a planned bomb load of 1,200 kg, the Mamut failed miserably with a maximum payload of 680 kg of explosives, a little over half of its planned load, despite this, the aircraft was still pushed through production and the first prototype was flown on the 7th of January 1928 by Stephen Olender. The WLR-9 initially suffered issues with weak engines that could not carry the weight of the aircraft, piled on with wings essentially held together with glue and wood pulp, The aircraft was almost scrapped. It wasn't until 1931 when the aircraft was outfitted with structural spars on the wings and stronger engines to allow the aircraft to exceed speeds of 200 mph, however at the time, the Mamut was already far obsolete in comparison to even Iosian light bombers at the time period.
Operational History
Even during the first few years of its servitude, the WLR-9 was considered an obsolete and "clunky" bomber and was initially used for training roles, however at the start of the Second Global War, the Mamut was reassigned to its inital bomber role, despite even the slowest Dieswenian fighters could intercept the Mamut with ease. Despite the many uses during the war, many of the WLR-9s survived the conflict with many being used as twilight/night bombers despite being rater ill-equpted for said missions.
After the Second Global War, the WLR-9 was still in use long after it's planned retirement date and into the 1960s, far outclassed by anything in any country across the globe, The WLR-9 is accredited with the only jet kill from a bomber in the 1950's when a Hon-Kain piloted ARF-3 Akula went to intercept a WLR-9 on reconnaissance mission, however the bomber flew too slowly for the Akula to stay behind and stalled, killing the Pilot of the aircraft and technically earning the Mamut a victory.
The last of the Mamut bombers were eventually inoperable due to natural wear on the airframe and lack of parts available for the Bomber and the last one took off at 8:40 AM on the 4th of July, 1968 when upon take off, the WLR-9's right wing spars detached from the aircraft before the bomber gained altitude, causing the bomber's wing to snap off, the entirety of the crew survived with minor to no injuries.
