The Great Depression hit Epic Engineering hard. Keeping the production lines afloat and running was a hard task for any company to manage during that time, but for a small scale operation like Epic Engineering, it was a fight for survival. It was up our cost effective craftsmanship and our design and business smarts to make it. That is even before considering the brewing storm clouds on the horizon.

Origin

Witnessing the rise of Germany after 1933 first hand and vehemently disagreeing with the direction the Nation was going, Cuthbert Epic - who's wife was in fact German herself - knew he had to stay ahead of the curve to position his designs competitively in this time of rapid innovation. Pushing his knowledge and talent to the limit, he strove to build a fighter plane that could stand up to anything any major nation could field, with the hope of yet more lucrative contracts. As such, when the Warlord was unveiled in March 1939, it turned out it could evenly match the Messerschmitts and Spitfires of the day.

Notable Combat Records

Due to its modern full metal construction and reliability, this aircraft found some popularity in tropical regions such as Malaya, which is where yet another peculiar battle between different flights of Epic Engineering's aircraft.
On January 13th 1942, a flight of 15 Harpoon MkIIs were launched from the carrier IJN Ryujo to strike naval assets around Sumatra. However, due to a navigation error, this formation ended up flying into the Airspace of a combat air patrol of 3 Warlords stationed in Singapore. Despite being outnumbered, the fighters engaged the Japanese attackers head on in a intense dogfight. They were rewarded for their boldness by receiving seven confirmed kills for only one severely damaged aircraft that would still return to base. Despite their best efforts, these brave men would not be able to change the tide of the disastrous Malayan campaign.

Design

Sticking with his philosophy of using inline engines, he designed a cutting edge full metal monoplane around an acquired Merlin Ia Engine producing 1030 HP. While Cuthbert initially wanted to design a bubbletop canopy, he incorporated a heavily armoured section behind the cockpit after concerns of survivability were raised by test pilots. Seeing the effectiveness of the M2 Browning .50cal machinegun as demonstrated by the recently unveiled P40 Warhawk, it was decided to increase the armament to 3 guns per Wing, an arrangement Cuthbert would claim was copied by colleagues at North American a few years later.

Handling

This plane combines decent speed with excellent manoeuvrability and handling, reaching a top speed of 590kmh at 5500m. With the large wing area, it also has a very favourable glide coefficient and stall characteristics.
