@Othawne Technically it would be the "A8M" by that definition, as an A7M already exists.

"A" means carrier fighter
"B" means carrier torpedo bomber
"D" means dive bomber
What about the B7A2? Dedicated torpedo bomber that's good at dive bombing, how confusing can it get?

How did you get to A87M?
Because, A is for carriers, 87 would mean the 87th build, and M for Mitsubishi...
