The tanto-point blade is forged of a stainless steel and carbon steel laminate, with the carbon steel sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel in order to provide both sharpness and a degree of rust protection across most of the blade. The tanto point blade was chosed due to its strength, since it retains most of its thickness until the end. When a close encounter with the enemy closes to hand-hand combat range, the Mk 1 Combat Knife provides the Pilotmarian soldier a literal edge in the fight. The stainless steel hilt provides an additional weapon, giving the wielder a weapon which to stun or kill an opponent with a blow to the head, and a secondary weapon if the blade somehow breaks.
