[FICTIONAL]
D-3, or Design-3, is an early 50's interceptor.
From the rapid development of bomber aviation in early 50's, there was a need for an interceptor to counter such threats. [...] had a task of building an interceptor plane that had the brand-new jet engine, and it would have both guns and cutting-edge, still barely functional and unreliable air-to-air missiles. The plane must've had high service ceiling, long range and the ability to withstand the stresses of flying supersonic, with it's wings swept at an optimal angle to minimize drag. To help find airborne threats and guide missiles, the plane was fitted with a [...] radar, that could see a bomber-size targets at about 10 miles. It's jet engine, angled 2 degrees downwards to help staying level at high altitudes, was fitted with an afterburner, allowing the plane to catch any bomber of that era, though it's power was not enough to maintain level flight at supersonic speeds. To further increase the range, the plane could be equipped with additional fuel pods on it's wing pylons. If needed, the pylons can hold all sorts of weaponry, from bombs to rocket pods to missiles for air superiority or close air support missions. This fighter's primary role is interceptions, so it's not as maneuverable as other non-interceptor fighters, nor it's armored and rigid to perform CAS missions as good.
D-3 barely served for the [...] air force, with the D-3 being replaced with it's "upgraded" version, the D-3-2, almost as soon as it gotten in air force's hangars. Around 400 D-3's were built, with most of them cut to pieces for spares. Currently, almost all of them are rotting at an abandoned [....] aircraft dump, with a couple still intact in museums.
