Main description

The Convair CPA-89 was a large cargo aircraft powered by piston engines and was an attempt to enter the cargo market by Convair.

History

Due to the increasing amount of competition in the cargo aircraft model, Convair proposed an aircraft to compete with major aircraft companies, such as Lockheed, who had released the L-100 prior to the mid 1960, and the Short Brothers, which released the Short Belfast, and much more.
Convair began the CPA-89 in the early 60s, and development was underway, later on when the prototype stages, they found the CPA-89 to be underpowered due to the piston engine design used in the XC-99, although later on it was later replaced with turboprop engines in its service.
The aircraft was certified by the FAA and started service in the 70s, it was popular in short haul and medium sized routes, and continents such as the United States, Canada, and Africa.
However it was found to be later obsolete in the upcoming decades due to the propeller design and the lacking efficiency compared to the use of jet-powered cargo airliners.
Although it was considered mixed as a cargo airliner as a whole, it was one of Convair's successful attempts to enter the commercial market, having dozens of aircraft produced compared to the Convair 880 and 990, and having a fairly reliable service with cargo airlines before it was phased out.
