MiG-21Bis v.1.4 (choose your loadout)

26.3k BRuthless  8.6 years ago

v.1.4 New features of the newest game version implemented and some other improvements.
Changes:
-positioning lights and landing lights added (AG1)
-wings were cleaned up a bit and made more sturdy to reduce micro wobbling
-strength and dampening of the landing gear adjusted
-ailerons resized and flaps added (controlled with the trim slider)
-added more intakes and deleted some others that didn't get any air in the new version to keep the engines at full power
-removed booster engine (maybe I'll manage to build a real RATO booster in the future)
-engine exhaust and power multipliers were adjusted
-adjustments on the weapon stations to allow safer detach and more loading
-elevators now allow for a higher pitch-angle
-paintjob changed to a more standard russian one again
-main engine was placed a bit more to the back for looks
-all bombs now feature chase cams
-gave the guns more firepower

Full list of controls:
Throttle = engine throttle
Pitch = elevators
Roll = ailerons
Yaw = rudder
Landing Gear = toggle landing gear up/down
Vtol up (above middle) = extend airbrakes
Vtol down (down to the middle) = retract airbrakes
Trim up = flaps down
Trim down (to the middle) = flaps up
AG1 = activate lights
AG2 = detach external fuel-tank
AG3 = detach everything on the pylons
AG4 = afterburner stage 1
AG5 = afterburner stage 2
C = switch to next camera
Fire Guns = fire main guns
Fire Weapons = fire attached weapons
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v.1.3 This is the final version until game updates that might help the design come out.
- added AG 4 & 5 for afterburner stages 1 & 2 (but you can't visually determine if your rocket boosters or afterburners are on now)
- another VTOL-engine was applied and VTOL-engine placement was modified to optimize CoM and add some detail at the bottom
- placement of slim-intakes was modified again and also some more intakes were added
- cockpit has gotten more details and visibility was increased
- changes to the wings were made and some more wings added to allow for greater maneuverability
- gave the gun some more detail and made it dual-barrel like the real one (it only has one muzzle in reality, so I thought it was single-barrel)
- well, this obviously doubled the firepower
- changed the number to a more russian one, put it on both sides now and gave it a new paintjob (still not trying to do a camouflage :D)

Some data about the new version:
- stallspeed is ~130 MPH
- it becomes maneuverable at 200 MPH, which helps in close-range dogfights, below that it is of course maneuverable, but very sluggish and only recommended for landing after you've lined up with the runway
- sustainable speed while fully turning is ~1250-1300 MPH
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

v.1.2
- added AG 3 to jettison all weapons on the external weapon stations
- changed the placement and rotation of slim-intakes and placed more of them
- second VTOL-engine integrated for increased power of booster rockets
- resized the external fuel-tank to be more scale
- got rid of all fuel in the fuselages and put an unlimited fuel-tank inside for better handling and because the second VTOL-engine makes it extremely thirsty
- airbrakes are now controlled with VTOL-controls
- now contains the whole available set of external weapons, which can be placed on the pylons by yourself to get a loadout that fits your specific needs (external fuel-tank is also optional, it has to be attached to the detacher at the bottom of the craft if used)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v.1.1
Improved stability, maneuverability and more realistic gun settings. Special paintjob and number for silver-grade celebration! :D
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a scale replica of the MiG-21Bis (Fishbed-N), a greatly improved version of the MiG-21, which was made in the 60's to mid 80's and used in the Vietnam War.

The MiG-21Bis (Bison) is a rather small and lightweight multirole-fighter, mainly used for interception of enemy bombers and fighters and also for attacking ground units. It was the answer to the new american F-16 jets (because the MiG-29 was still in development and other russian aircraft weren't so maneuverable) and is still in service of many air forces around the world (most of them with heavy upgrades to the avionics, weapon pylons to carry newer armament, new advanced weapon systems, radars, HUDs, targeting-pods and even multi-function-displays like in the A-10C).

You can now choose your loadout from the weapon arsenal, which contains:
4x 500 lbs dumb bomb (FAB250)
4x 250 lbs (FAB100) dumb bomb
6x Interceptor medium- to long-range Air-to-Air missile (Wympel R-27R)
6x Guardian short-range Air-to-Air missile (Wympel R-60MK)
4x rocket-pods (UB-16-57U)
6x Inferno Air-to-Ground radar-seeking missile (Ch-31)
It is also equipped with two afterburner stages, activated with AG4 and 5 (5 has much more power than 4, both together have the highest power of course).

On the side you see an external fuel-tank (PTB490), which can be dropped with AG2 after attaching it to the plane, but doesn't have to be used.

It flies quite realistic. You can throw it around like crazy at high speeds with afterburners enabled. It is pretty agile and now manages to go 1800+ MPH with both afterburner stages.

If you are landing with the bombs and fuel-pod still attached, be very careful. Approach at around 200 MPH with very low vertical speed and low AoA (angle of attack), otherwise the bombs or the fuel-pod may touch the ground and explode (also looks good, though). Isn't that much of a problem since v.1.2 anymore!
It is pretty easy to land with the fuel-pod and bombs detached before.

I hope you enjoy it!
Feedback is appreciated! :)

    @TheRemesy What and where are you streaming? :)

    @TheRemesy One part of the right wing has more drag while the other part has no drag, but overall the drag of the wings should be equal. I mirrored those parts several times now and they always have the same drag. Also the pitot tube makes no real difference. Even when it's not attached it makes a slight right turn on the first few metres and then goes on straight. Very awkward behavior, but it only affects the start of the acceleration up to ~100 MPH, then it goes completely straight.

    @TheRemesy I mirrored the wings so they have exactly the same amount of drag. The 1.3 version had problems with the wings having different drag, this one doesn't. Except for the pitot tube, there's nothing asymmetric in the drag model, so I suspect that to be the reason.

    @JacobHardy64 Well, atleast I hope I got rid of all the malfunctioning. Especially weapon launches were critical until some hours ago. :D The drag of the pitot tube makes it go to the right when starting on the ground by the way, needs a bit of rudder input to keep it straight on takeoff.

    But you did it, as demonstrated here! @BRuthless

    @JacobHardy64 The problem I had was just making a very good design even better. It's hard to improve something that's already top notch. :D

    It's quite adaptable @BRuthless

    @JacobHardy64 Basically you can just put on the weapons yourself from the menu, but I thought it's more convenient to have all weapons that were tested with the design right there to just put on those you need and delete the others. When you want another loadout, you just load the full creation again and it's reset. Also you can make versions with your preferred loadouts and save them, then load them anytime you need them. :)
