The AEK-971 is a Soviet/Russian selective fire assault rifle chambered in the 5.54x39 cartridge. It was designed at the Kovrov Mechanical Plant by Sergey Koksharov in 1978 and is currently manufactured in the Degtyarev Plant. It is 7.3 lbs unloaded, 37.8 inches long with the stock unfolded, and it's barrel is 16.5 inches long. It's operation system consists of a gas operated, rotating bolt, balanced recoil system. It's cyclic rate of fire is 900 rpm but practically it would be 100 on full auto and 40 on semi automatic and it's muzzle velocity is 2,887 fps. It has an effective range of 500 meters and is equipped with iron sights.
