Sputnik 1
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to be put into orbit, on 4 October 1957. Sputnik was launched from the Baykonur Cosmodrome, in the RSS Kazakhstan.
The launch of Sputnik I, which was made in the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, shocked the Western world, and caused the United States to start the Space Race.
