SR-120 Vulture
The year is 2027, china has lunched lunar satellites. Unannounced to nato the satellite's carried a counter satellite weapon. From the moon china shot down all satellites in a geosincronous orbit over the north eat hemmipher of earth leaving a massive void in western intelligence gathering. The race to for a high altitude stealth spy plane program heated up for the first time in more than half a century.
The requirements for the program were quite simple. The plane required a robust surveillance package, including
- radar jammer
-quantum radar jammer
-articulating high resolution camera
-must be capable of high altitudes
The plane could not rely solely on technology for all its needs, due to GPS satellites being destroyed the plane had to rely on traditional avionics systems.
The plane had to be able to reach ultra sonic speeds at high altitudes for long periods of time without being detected.The program entrances only had 18 months to bring a airframe to the government for testing. Out of 4 entrys the SR-120 vulture was selected.
The vulture featured scram jet technology pioneered by nasa that can propel it to speeds in excess of mach 4.6 at altitudes of 99000 feet. The vulture has low wing loading and can act as a glider if the situation arises reducing its infrared signature, with a stall speed of 105 mph it can land at any land runway currently in use. The program did not come without its faults, like any other rushed program, the aircraft had its design flaws. If full pitch is input under 1100 mph, the aircraft had a tendency to snap roll killing 2 test pilots during testing. However the vulture did have several improvements on previous spy planes. Unlike the U-2 the vulture can land without assistance from ground crews, and it can also take off and land with a full fuel tank unlike the SR-71.
The vulture has proven to be the perfect stop gap airframe until the impending threat of lunar satellites is resolved and new satellites are launched back into orbit.
