INTO THE EYE OF THE STORM: NOAA42
Noaa42 is a very interesting accident that has not been covered much in SP, so here I am. Some of the people onboard were Captain Jerry McKim, unknown age and flight hours, A scientist named Frank Marks, a flight commander, Lowell Genzlinger, and flight director Jeffery Masters. The aircraft was a modified L-188 Electra named the P-3 Orion. This flight would intercept Hurricane Hugo, on September 15, 1989.
THE ACCIDENT:
The P-3 was flying through Hurricane Hugo when suddenly, one of the gauges malfunctioned. One of the engines ignited. Along with loosing an engine, the violent winds of Hurricane Hugo were tossing the plane around. The plane was encountering big G’s. Long after this happened, Noaa42 exited the storm and was back in the clear sky after the pilots fought for their life.
