VTOL slider determines engine effort at altitude (At max, it forces the engines to operate as if at sea level), Cruise assist holds the pitch angle that you've stopped giving pitch input on, but it'll kill you if you stall it, seriously, any uncontrolled 360 degree pitch roll will result in it actively trying to overthrow any semblance of sentient life it encounters, best to pull the AG8 plug in time.
