Designed in 1956 as a long-range reconnaissance and bomber aircraft, the TU-81 series served with the Soviet Red Air Force until 1981. The TU-81RvDY (which stands for the translation of "reconnaissance") "Chestplate-C" first entered service in 1962. It featured a more advanced radar system, which is why the cockpit was placed on the top of the fuselage, as well as enlarging the nose. The TU-81 also saw some success as an export aircraft, with Romania, Finland, and Hungary also using the plane. The last TU-81 was retired from active service by the Hungarian air force in 1995, and it now flies border patrol sorties.
