The BR-4 Whirlwind was originally designed to be a carrier born medium bomber piloted by a hybrid crew of one pilot, and one AI targeting system, which would also be able to fly the plane if the pilot could not do so. it was the Pacific Democracies go to bomber for the first half of the 20th century.
Teething problems with the AI system meant that the rear turret could not be used for the first part of it's life, and so it relied on fighters heavily for protection, as it's only defensive weapons were pointed forward, and it was a slow and cumbersome airplane by fighters standards.
