A6M2 'Zero'
~~~~OPERATIONAL AT HIGHEST SETTINGS~~~~
Activation Group 1 = jettison droptank (improved performance)
The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a long-range fighter aircraft, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was designated as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 Carrier Fighter. The official Allied reporting name was "Zeke", although the use of the name "Zero" was later commonly adopted by the Allies as well.
When it was introduced early in World War II, the Zero was considered the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world, combining excellent maneuverability and very long range. In early combat operations, the Zero gained a legendary reputation as a dogfighter, achieving the outstanding kill ratio of 12 to 1, but by mid-1942 a combination of new tactics and the introduction of better equipment enabled the Allied pilots to engage the Zero on generally equal terms.
Although the Mitsubishi A6M was outdated by 1944, design delays and production difficulties of newer Japanese aircraft types meant that it continued to serve in a front line role until the end of the war. During the final years of the War in the Pacific, the Zero was also adapted for use in kamikaze operations.
I have had multiple requests to make make a ‘Zero’, and so I made two of them. This A6M2 is my most agile replica yet. It can fly through the Trench Run with ease and has incredible range. However, I was unable to implement landing gear on this design. Using rotator blocks for retractable gear greatly reduced performance, and really subtracted from the aesthetic looks. I also couldn't put detachable gear on the wings because it would cause the plane to wobble and explode (possible bug?).
So when you fly this plane, just set the starting locations to one of the approach finals so that you are already in the air. For optimal performance, jettison the droptank. Also, when maneuvering you can catch the propeller in a sweet spot and it will spin on its own!
Enjoy this beauty flying around the islands, or bring some Devine Wind to the aircraft carriers!!
25.5k Scriefers@planelover400, I'm working on her right now. I'm about 60% done and perfected the sweep wings. If I don't run into any more hassles, I'll probably get it out by tonight.9.8 years ago
4,227 GeebersSweet plane as always! Thanks for taking other people's and my suggestions:) I really think you captured the maunerability well and made it instantly recognizable as a Zero! And with the new ways to create props does this mean you can make more prop planes, since the scale is now better? If you are still reading my little essay, keep it up!:)9.8 years ago
