Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB
The Typhoon was an escort fighter with heavy armour and powerful firepower built by Hawker in 1937 at the request of the Air Staff, later the Air Ministry "F.18/37 specification". With the arrival of the new Hawker Storm fighters on the scene, the Typhoon was largely transformed into a ground-attack role, and with the Allied landings in Normandy on 6 June, Typhoon squadrons began to provide close support, with RAF front-line air controllers travelling alongside the ground forces and being able to call in Typhoon air support from roving squadrons in the area.Firing with bombs, rockets and artillery, the Typhoon attacks had a debilitating effect on enemy morale, and General Dwight Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander who played a key role in the Battle of Normandy, later singled out the Typhoon for its contribution to the Allied victory, and, as Allied forces sped eastwards, the Typhoons shifted to their bases in France to continue to provide support.Weapons:- 4 × 20 mm Hispano M2 cannon- 8 × RP-3 unguided air-to-ground rockets
