Design features
The F4U is quite different from the aircraft at that time in several aspects. First of all, the aircraft's wings adopt the layout of inverted seagull wings. Second, the F4U adopted the largest piston engine at that time - Pratt&Whitney R-2800, with a horsepower of 2000, while the engine horsepower of most military aircraft in the same period was only 1000. These characteristics also became a focus of F4U at that time. On October 1, 1940, the prototype XF4U-1 set a flight speed record at that time in a test flight, reaching 405 miles per hour, becoming the first American fighter to exceed 400 miles per hour. However, the long nose makes the front view of the pilot poor, and the repeated improvements in the future are almost all aimed at this problem. At the same time, due to the low position of the wing, the pilot did not handle it properly when landing (for example, the time of opening the landing gear was wrong), which was prone to accidents.
