After initiation of the home defense fighters act in 1945, Messerschmitt submitted three P.1110 designs, all of which were eventually turned down. In secret, the company developed a fourth aircraft, nicknamed the "Nachtpferd", or "Night Horse". A working prototype was completed on March 1, 1945, and had its maiden flight on March 3. It was a complete success, with everything except the mock-up guns being functional. Because of the lack of vertical stabilizers, the aircraft tended to yaw left and right on the runway, but the problem was minor. On March 21, the aircraft took off again, this time fitted with a functional aramament: Two MK.108 30mm cannons in the belly of the nose, and two Mk.151 20mm cannons in the wing roots. Since the plane was only a prototype, the base colors were never changed, hence the beige and red oxide color scheme. WWII ended for Germany on May 7, 1945. The final loadout would have consisted of two Mk.108 cannons, two MK.151 cannons, and four X-10 air-to-air missiles.
