The MQ-9 is an advanced aircraft that surpasses its predecessor, the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator, in terms of size, weight, and capabilities. It shares compatibility with the same ground systems for control. With a robust 950-shaft-horsepower (712 kW) turboprop engine, the Reaper outperforms the Predator's 115 horsepower (86 kW) piston engine. This increased power enables the Reaper to carry 15 times more ordnance payload and cruise at approximately three times the speed of the MQ-1. The aircraft's operations, including weapons deployment, are supervised and directed by aircrew stationed at the Ground Control Station (GCS).
