Developed as a high speed - unmanned laser interceptor to catch up to near hypersonic bombers before they could reach their targets. in the spring of 2093 the Ryph made its first flight when it was forced to attempt to intercept an unkown recon drone over the N.A.C. - the Ryph quickly became popular in Neurologically Advanced Vision Interface System (NAVIS) pilots who could control the aircraft with much greater efficiency as they were VR'd into the "Cockpit" of the craft.
