The development of the J-8II aircraft began in September 1980 and first flew on June 12, 1984. The aircraft has redesigned some airframes on the basis of the J-8. The aircraft adopts air intake on both sides, which increases the space for the installation of avionics equipment. At the same time, the fire control system, weapon system, airborne electronic equipment and power system have been improved, and the WP-13A engine with greater power has been installed, so that the Medium and low air combat capability and all-weather blocking attack capability. In addition to equipping China's air force and navy, the aircraft is also ready to be exported.
