Typhoon AM-1 abomination

History

The XFB1FC (EXperimental, Fighter, Bomber, Mk1, F.Corp) was intended to be a fast, dedicated fighter bomber platform that could theoretically substitute for fighters like the P-51 and 47 that were put into the role, flying over the battlefield after dropping its payload to act as CAP for allied Soilders on the frontlines. Fast development started in early 1943, and by mid 1944, 2 prototypes with elements of navy attackers and the British Hawker typhoon were completed. Uniquely, in order to test out the abilities of an aircraft in a dedicated fighter bombing role, 1 of the 2 models was sent over to the UK in late 1944 to participate in 'Active Combat Testing’ in the Western front. "Rabid Tourist,” the name given to the model sent, flew a total of 57 sorties during its time in Europe, proving to only be adequate in most aspects except for the amount of payload it could carry, and its range. The project was cancelled after it was decided that simply using the available fighters on the front in fighter bomber roles was much more efficient. “Rabid Tourist” would leave combat with an impressive confirmed record due to frontline combat of 1 reconnaissance JU-88 shot down, a FW-190 shot down in a CAP sortie along with another heavily damaged, (that presumably also went down) 7-8 vehicles, including a Panzer IV and Panther knocked out, and a single 20mm AA gun destroyed, along with a few other targets. post war, both examples of the XFB1FC were put into storage in the U.S., and scrapped in 1948.

Notes/Credits

  • First time making an original aircraft in a while, I think it turned out well :)
  • Not too much to say about this one (as always) it handles decently, and there aren't really any issues with it (I will regret saying this)
