FXU-3 Maelstrom

Developed in the early spring of 1944 in fear that future assaults on both the Pacific and European fronts would become a stalemate, the US Air Force turned to a lesser known private company known by the name of Kradworks who had been steady on reverse engineering captured axis craft such as the A6M Zero and BF-109. A contract was created and Kradworks had until the 7th of June to develop a high maneuverability, long range fighter/bomber in the event that the war did indeed become a stalemate, however, during the events of D-Day, it became apparent that the war was in the allies favor and the contract was cancelled for the new aircraft, despite this, twenty Maelstrom assault aircraft were developed and had seen small amounts of action in the Pacific Theater, although, due to the gull wings and set back canopies, the Maelstrom was occasionally mistaken for the F4U Corsair, thus its unit name was then given as the FXU-3 Maelstrom. The FXU-3 Maelstrom also boasted an unique feature that its engine was manufactured in such a way that the blades were divided into two segments; a larger hallowed out blade, and a smaller solid blade that gave this aircraft a distinct sound like that of a mixture of a V-1 Buzzbomb and the JU-87s Jericho Trumpets.

However, despite its unknown use, the aircraft was ill received by its pilots and mechanics as 5 out of the twenty were quickly destroyed due to the almost nonexistent ground clearance between the props, forcing the pilots to pull up from the get go. The Maelstrom also had a common tendency to stall out at high altitudes while flying below 300 miles per hour, leading this craft to be almost completely ignored throughout the war.
