The G4M1 Type-1 Attack was a twin-engine medium bomber owned by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Pacific War. Designed and built by the same company as its predecessor, the Type 96 Land Attack, its successor, the Galaxy, was not gradually replaced by the end of 1944 due to technical problems, so the Type I Land Attack remained the Imperial Navy's main attack aircraft until the Japanese surrender. The Allied identification code for enemy aircraft called the Type I "Betty", but its engines or integral wing fuel tanks were difficult to extinguish if hit, so the US Marines derisively referred to the Type I as an "airborne lighter".
