Story

Following the successful deployment of the SU-59 "Zmei" during the Sino-American War, Russian military strategists identified a critical need for a specialized two-seat variant to serve multiple roles, including advanced pilot training, _electronic warfare (EW), and command-and-control in contested airspace _. This led to the development of the SU-59UB, a highly versatile, dual-seat version of the SU-59 designed to enhance Russia’s air combat capabilities.

Design and Modifications

The SU-59UB retained the core features of the SU-59, such as its stealth capabilities, supermaneuverability, and advanced sensor systems. However, significant design changes were made to accommodate the second crew member and expand its mission profile:

Dual Cockpit Configuration: The SU-59UB features a tandem-seat layout with state-of-the-art displays and controls. The rear seat is optimized for mission specialists, such as electronic warfare officers (EWOs) or tactical coordinators.

Expanded Avionics Suite: Equipped with an enhanced EW suite, the SU-59UB can disrupt enemy radar and communication systems, paving the way for other aircraft or ground forces. It also features advanced data link systems, allowing it to coordinate with other units, including SU-59s, drones, and ground forces.

Combat Trainer Role: The two-seat configuration makes the SU-59UB an ideal platform for training new pilots on advanced fifth-generation systems without sacrificing combat readiness.

Operational Roles

The SU-59UB, nicknamed "Zmei-B", became a key asset in the Russian Air Force due to its ability to perform diverse missions:

  1. Pilot Training and Transition: The SU-59UB played a crucial role in preparing pilots for the complex systems of the SU-59, reducing the learning curve while maintaining operational readiness.

  2. Airborne Command Center: Acting as a tactical hub, the SU-59UB coordinated missions involving multiple aircraft and unmanned systems, enhancing battlefield situational awareness.

  3. Force Multiplier: By operating alongside single-seat SU-59s and drones like the Chinese CJ-21 (future project), the SU-59UB provided critical support, ensuring mission success in complex combat environments.

Deployment in the Sino-American War

The SU-59UB made its combat debut in 2029, during the height of the Sino-American conflict. Deployed as part of elite squadrons, the "Zmei-B" served as a command platform, orchestrating large-scale air operations over the contested skies of East Asia. In one notable operation, a squadron of SU-59s and drones, led by a SU-59UB, successfully ambushed an American strike group that included QA-10F Phoenix drones and F-23A fighters, inflicting heavy losses.

The SU-59UB also demonstrated its effectiveness in electronic warfare, disabling American AWACS systems and creating safe corridors for Russian and Chinese strike forces. Its ability to adapt to multiple roles made it indispensable, especially in contested environments where air superiority was fiercely contested.
