F-4 PHANTOM
made for the 3rd generation jet fighter challenge
INTRO
The F-4 Phantom II is a high-performance fighter-bomber, capable of operating in all weather and light conditions. Originally developed during the second half of the 1950s by McDonnell Aircraft, later McDonnell Douglas and the current Boeing, it entered the service of the United States Navy in the late 1960s.
HISTORY
Initially developed for use on board aircraft carriers, as a long-range interceptor, providing the air defense of the fleet, it demonstrated a great flexibility of performance, being also adopted by the Air Force, the Marine Corps and even by several allied countries, revealing - an aircraft capable of performing a wide range of functions, from interception to bombing, passing through reconnaissance and electronic warfare, for which specific versions have been developed.
At the end of 1979, when its production was finished, 5,195 copies of all variants had been built, of which 2,874 for the USAF, 1,264 for the Navy and Marines and 1,057 for export, remaining today still in activity in some nations , after an extensive update.
Some aircraft are remembered for the huge number of units built, others for the long time of use in service, still others for the reliability in fulfilling their missions. But when a plane is recognized and leads the three categories mentioned it stands out among its peers
