The DF-14 Air-Launched Ballistic Missile (ALBM) began as a modernization effort for the DF-12 nuclear missile. Initially designated the DF-13, the project was canceled due to rising costs amid an economic downturn. However, three years later, a new proposal emerged to design a ballistic missile specifically tailored for air-launch capabilities. This project was named the DF-14, marking a shift toward modernizing China's long-range strike options.

The DF-14's development was kept secret for five years, during which time advancements in guidance systems, propulsion, and miniaturization were made. After another year of rigorous testing, the prototype exceeded expectations, demonstrating superior range, accuracy, and overall performance.

Once it passed all trials, the missile was greenlit for production. Today, the DF-14 is deployed on China’s H-6NM strategic bombers, significantly boosting the nation’s air-launched nuclear and conventional strike capabilities. The DF-14 represents a critical leap in China's strategic arsenal, offering enhanced speed and range for long-distance precision strikes.
