While Mikoyan-Gurevic was designing the MiG-23, Sukhoi was trying to create a fighter-interceptor to compete against the Flogger. The Red Falcon was so near to enter service, with its modern radar system, the first IRsT and high speed. Unfortunately it never entered service due to the lack of a big number of countermeasures (only 32), the capabilty of carring only 4 missiles and a worse manoevrability than the MiG-23
