Description
The SMCA Freive II was developed by SMC Aerospace for the Saltwater Air Force. The aircraft is designed specifically for special forces support, capable of penetrating lightly defended airspace at very low level and deploying paratroops, as well as conducting signals intelligence and close air support taskings. Freives carry a crew of two, along with up to four paratroopers or mission specialists.
The Freive is powered by a single 400hp piston engine, at a speed of up to 135 mph and altitude of 25,000 feet. The aircraft has a range of up to 1,350km and maximum payload of 500kg plus passengers.
Four hardpoints are present for weapons carriage, ranging from gunpods to rocket pods and anti-tank guided missiles. The aircraft also carries a number of antenna for signals intelligence work and has a fixed armament of two 7.62mm machine guns mounted in the wings.
Twenty-four aircraft have been built, operated exclusively by a single Saltwater Air Force squadron, the "Flying Dolphins". The squadron saw service during the Saltwater Constitutional Crisis, deploying paratroops against the loyalist forces of the renegade monarchy, but otherwise has seen little duty, partly due to a lack of low-level conflict and also due to the largely covert nature of the unit's operations.
